1st FESTIVAL OF PRIMITIVE SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES

30 April - 3 May 2005

It was a very successful camp with over 20 participants, many of them interested in wild edible plants.

Our campsite. We utilized a variety of shelters. One of the first things we did was building a grass wickiup.

The wickiup complete! The right photo is showing Wojtek who ate only wild plants for 5 days. Here he is presenting a small cake made with bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) rhizomes.

A closeup of the bracken cake. Meanwhile girls collected cattails shoots (Typha) as we... mainly gathered things to eat... not to be hungry.

Bernard ran basket-making workshops.

We cooked hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium) soup - traditional ancient Polish soup, and wild garlic - ramsons (Allium ursinum) was most delicious with stewed escargots...

Ania cooking cattail, garlic and snails. We were lucky as May is an official gathering period for snails (Helix pomatia).

And this is another delicacy - marsh woundwort Stachys palustris, whose rhizomes we dug out from fields (where it grows as a weed). We fried it like chips, yummy!

Justyna and Malgosia

Goodby at the bus stop.
